Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need a writer?

All businesses have a need to relay information to their markets consistently and in a way that will move prospects to action. A writer can help you tell your story concisely, creatively and persuasively. A writer will help you find a concept and shape a compelling story, telling the audience the key points you want to share. A good writer is an invaluable member of your marketing team.

What can you write?

I am a versatile generalist with experience writing anything from ad copy to newsletters, sales collateral to speeches, presentations to web content, direct mail to trade articles. If you need to say it, I can help you say it!

Do you have a specialty?

Over the years, I have helped numerous companies launch or reposition their written communications.  I enjoy brainstorming and re-envisioning who they are and working with clients to create more effective and up-to-date messaging.

Why can't I do it myself?

You could, but if writing isn't your specialty, why would you? Each of us has certain strengths and skills and you should spend your valuable time engaged in those areas. Plus, it is often difficult for us to edit our own writing and to clarify our own thoughts. It just makes sense to hire a professional who can help you communicate more effectively.

Why should I hire you?

Because I have both the academic credentials and the real world chops! Here's my story: from a very young age I loved both reading and writing. I always had a big vocabulary and was very verbal. Naturally, I majored in Communication in college, and after graduation I entered the workforce as an editor on a trade magazine. Next I moved to a Fortune 500 company where I helped create and successfully execute an image that conveyed my company's message. Finally, I became the publisher of a business-to-business magazine and got to do it all. As my career progressed, I found myself writing less and managing and selling more. So, after 15 years, I decided to go back to what I do best: writing. Having my own business allows me to do what I love, with clients who share my passion for the beauty of well-chosen words. I find great joy in helping others say what they mean.

How will we work together?

If possible, we start with a meeting to determine what needs to be written and to establish the key contacts, along with a timeline. However, with the widespread use of phone, fax, courier and email, much work can be done without ever meeting. I can adapt to your style.

What will it cost?

Good writing is a strategic investment. It costs less to use a freelance writer than to have a writer on staff or hire an agency, but without any loss of quality. Like any other business professional, rates can be quoted hourly or by the project and are competitive.

Do you work with other freelancers?

Absolutely! If you are a start-up company I can help you find good graphic designers, photographers, printers, or other skilled professionals. If you are a larger company and you have a big project, I can coordinate with other writers to bring the project in on time and at budget.

What else can you do?

A good writer is, first and foremost, a consultant who can provide a client with communication strategy and suggestions.  I may be also able to assist you--or refer you--to graphic design, media relations and public relations professionals.  Just ask!
